Find Your Perfect Stay in Scotland
Scotland offers some of the most diverse and welcoming accommodation in the world, from luxury castle hotels to cosy countryside bed and breakfasts. Whether you’re planning a city break in Edinburgh, a Highland adventure, or a peaceful island retreat, this guide will help you find the perfect place to stay.
Types of Accommodation in Scotland
Hotels

Scotland’s hotels range from historic city-centre properties to luxurious country house hotels. Many historic buildings have been converted into boutique hotels offering modern comforts while retaining their character.
Bed & Breakfasts (B&Bs)
For a truly Scottish experience, stay in a family-run B&B. You’ll enjoy warm hospitality, home-cooked breakfasts, and local knowledge that no guidebook can provide.
Self-Catering Cottages
Perfect for families or groups wanting flexibility, Scotland has thousands of self-catering cottages, many in stunning rural locations.
Castle Stays
Experience Scottish history firsthand by staying in a castle. Many historic castles now offer accommodation, ranging from characterful mid-range rooms to luxury suites.
Hostels & Budget Accommodation
Scotland has an excellent network of hostels, particularly popular with walkers, cyclists, and budget-conscious travellers.
Best Areas to Stay in Scotland
Edinburgh
The capital offers everything from luxury hotels on Princes Street to charming B&Bs in the historic Old Town. Consider staying in the New Town for Georgian elegance or Leith for trendy restaurants and bars.
Glasgow
Scotland’s largest city has accommodation to suit all budgets. The West End is popular for its Victorian architecture and vibrant atmosphere.
The Highlands

For breathtaking scenery, stay in the Highlands. Popular bases include Fort William (for Ben Nevis), Aviemore (for Cairngorms), and Inverness (Loch Ness).
The Islands
From the dramatic landscapes of Skye to the peaceful beaches of the Outer Hebrides, island accommodation often books up quickly, so reserve well in advance.
Booking Tips for Scottish Accommodation
- Book Early: Scotland is popular year-round, especially during summer and festival seasons
- Consider Location: Public transport in rural areas can be limited, so check accessibility
- Read Reviews: Check recent reviews on multiple platforms
- Ask About Parking: Many city-centre properties have limited or paid parking
- Check What’s Included: Some B&Bs include breakfast, others offer self-catering options
Seasonal Considerations
Summer (June-August)
Peak season: book as early as you can; popular areas can sell out months ahead. Expect higher prices but enjoy long daylight hours.
Winter (December-February)
Great for winter sports and Hogmanay celebrations. Many rural accommodations close, but cities remain busy.
Spring & Autumn
Shoulder seasons offer better availability and prices while still enjoying good weather.
Special Accommodation Experiences
Lighthouse Stays
Several Scottish lighthouses now offer unique accommodation with spectacular coastal views.
Bothies
Basic mountain shelters maintained by the Mountain Bothies Association, free but very basic (bring your own sleeping bag; bothies cannot be booked, so leave them cleaner than you found them and follow the Mountain Bothies Association code).
Treehouses & Glamping
For something different, try luxury treehouses or glamping pods in scenic locations.
Getting the Best Deals
- Travel mid-week for better rates
- Consider package deals that include accommodation and activities
- Look for last-minute cancellations
- Check directly with accommodation providers, sometimes better than booking sites
Accessibility
Many historic properties have limited accessibility due to their age. Always check with accommodation providers if you have specific mobility requirements.
Visitor levy in Scottish cities
Edinburgh has charged a 5% visitor levy on overnight stays since 24th July 2026. It applies by check-in date rather than booking date, so it can affect stays booked months ago. Glasgow plans a 5% levy from January 2027 and Aberdeen 7% from April 2027 at the earliest, so check the rules for your dates before you book.
